Last week (Saturday 19th March, 2011) came the sad news that our Patron, Dr Kym Bonython had passed away peacefully at home with his family at his side. Kym was Patron of the Friends of SASA Inc since it was first inaugurated in August of 2008. Kym made a valuable contribution to the visual arts in Australia and overseas during his long and colourful life. As Patron to our organization he always attended our functions and will be sadly missed. A State Funeral was held at St Peter's Cathedral, Adelaide on Tuesday 29th March, 2011, to honour this great South Australian. President Jack Condous along with a number of other Board members and Friends of SASA attended this State Funeral. Jack Condous reports: 'It was a very enjoyable and moving service packed with family and friends. I contacted the Premiers office this afternoon and Lachlan Parker, Media Advisor for the Premier kindly forwarded the eulogy that the South Australian Premier, Mike Rann presented. I indicated that it was our wish to have access to this eulogy to be made available to our members through this web site and to interested arts organisations throughout Australia and overseas. Kym was much loved and will be sadly missed by our arts community'. Click here, to read the eulogy. The picture of Kym Bonython seen above is a still from a video made as part of the Friends SASA History Project at his home on 14th July, 2009. |

Ann Newmarch is a well known South Australian artist and former lecturer of the South Australian School of Art. The fascinating details of her early life were very interesting. Especially as Ann was an early feminist by her own standards - not those of the early women's movement. She has also been involved in many group and individual art shows as well as many community art shows particularly in Prospect. Here she has left her remarkable work along with other artists - with "pole" painting in her district as well as the famous Prospect mural on Prospect Road titled "History of Australia". |

| This event at the Bradley Forum was the first official fund raiser for Friends SASA for 2010 where $1000 was raised from entry fees and a raffle conducted on the evening. A further $850 is being raised from the sale of art works donated by our member artists. Purchases of works have been made by individuals, The Peace Trust and by contact after this function. Images of the remaining prints and art works have been posted on our web site in the Artworks for Sale section. If members or other people are interested in purchasing the signed Giclee cartoon by Hugo Shaw 28 copies remain available at a cost of $30 plus postage. The original cartoon has been sold to a Brisbane resident. |

We thank Associate Professor Jack Cross for his low key and successful interviewing technique where he gently guided Ann along the path of a most interesting life. Thankyou to all the members who assisted: to Lyn Robins who made the jewellery to present to Ann as a gift, and our hard working committee, who all sense a very positive reflection on a most enjoyable evening. 'Geoff on the Couch' Event
Well-known School of Art Lecturer, Geoff Wilson, was the unanimous choice of Friends Council for its first interview of interest and social evening, held on 24 March, 2009, at the Bradley Forum, UniSA.
‘Geoff on the Couch’, was attended by 70 members and their guests, and raised a total of $1000. Friends Vice President Winnie Pelz interviewed Geoff with insightful and inspirational questioning, and together they produced an informative and, at times, revealing presentation.

Geoff is well-known to so many of us, but he still managed to pull a few surprises out of the hat during the interview. In his inimitable manner, he wandered from couch to chair as the evening progressed resplendent in his dressing gown.
The evening included a silent auction of donated artworks, and was attended by patron Kym Bonython and his wife Julie. 14 new members joined on the night, and profits from the evening will be passed on to the SASA History Project.
A very special thank you to Geoff and Winnie for a great night, and to everyone who attended. Also to Council members, President Jack Condous and Garrie Hisco for ‘the couch’ and props. The assistance of UniSA staff was also appreciated.
